Pinewood Derby is this Saturday!
One last reminder, now that you're getting back into your normal routines... The Pinewood Derby week is here. Register the car on Wednesday or Thursday, and then race on Saturday.
All Pinewood Derby cars competing in the race must be registered in advance of the race. Registration will be hosted by Pat Hogan at 1623 Ardsley Place (directions below) on Wednesday, January 7, and Thursday, January 8, between 7:00pm and 8:30pm. You need only attend one session and it should only take a few minutes to weigh and measure your car.
If there are any problems with your scout's car not meeting the specifications, you will need to make the necessary modifications to bring it into compliance before it will be registered. You may take it back to your home and return when you have made the changes. Once a car has been weighed, measured, and found to be in compliance with the specifications, race officials will keep it so no further modifications to the car are made prior to the race. No modifications to the cars will be allowed on Race Day and race officials will be responsible for approving and supervising any car repairs needed between races.
The Derby committee needs boxes to help transport the cars - Staples paper boxes work well. If you have any, please bring them with you to weigh-in.

It's almost Pinewood Derby time
The Pinewood Derby is practically around the corner! While you're enjoying your holiday from school, remember that this is a great time to get your creative juices going so you can design and build your Pinewood Derby car. The races are Saturday, January 10, and that's less than two weeks away.
All cars must be registered, weighed, and turned in before the Derby. There are two nights to do this: Wednesday or Thursday, January 7 or 8. Come either night between 7pm and 8:30pm, to the Hogans' house (1623 Ardsley Place, off Crofton Parkway). Make sure that all paint and other decor is firmly attached and completely dry. The race officials will then transport your car to the Derby on Saturday.
The Pinewood Derby is on Saturday, January 10, in the cafeteria at Crofton Elementary. Heats go by rank:
9am - Webelos II
10am - Webelos I
11am - Bears
12:30pm - Wolves
1:30pm - Tigers
2:30pm - Pack Championship races (top three finishers from each age)
Wear your blue Scout uniform or yellow "Do Your Best" t-shirt.
The three fastest cars from each group will receive medals and will compete in the Pack Championship race. In addition, a panel of judges will review the entered vehicles, and design awards will go out in each rank.
Complete rules are in the winter Pack newsletter. The newsletter was mailed to your house or can be downloaded at http://www.croftonpack731.org/upload/WinterNewsletter2008.pdf.
Parents: we still need a few volunteers to help clean up after the Derby, starting at 3pm. If you can work for an hour or two after the event, please contact Dave Underwood at theunderwoods@verizon.net.
Our Pinewood Derby committee is busy planning a fantastic race day for you, so Do Your Best on your cars. We can't wait to see what you can do!

Service Project on Saturday 12/6
Pack 731's first outdoor service project of the year will be this Saturday, December 6. We will be cleaning up the grounds at Crofton Elementary. Come any time between 8am and 12noon, and lend a hand. This clean-up is our way of saying "thanks" to the school for letting us meet there for the Pinewood Derby, the Blue & Gold Banquet, and all our Pack meetings.
Bring your favorite leaf removal equipment, like rakes and work gloves. The Pack will provide lots of bags. Wear work clothes or your "Do Your Best" shirts. Participating Scouts earn a yellow Class B "Do Your Best" t-shirt.
This service project is especially for Wolves and Webelos plus their families, but all ranks are welcome.
Also, boys can learn to conduct an outdoor flag ceremony at the school flag-pole. In just one session, Wolves can fulfill Achievement #2efg, Bears can do Achievement #3hi, and Webelos can practice part of requirement #3 for the Citizen activity badge. Just meet Molly Weems at the school's flagpole at 9am or 10am.
(Note to boys who attend Crofton Elementary: this service project coincides with the PTA's Holly Jolly Workshop. If you plan to spend some time raking leaves and some time at the Workshop, be sure to RSVP to pat.hogan5@verizon.net by Tuesday.)
See you on Saturday!
